What is a Trucker Cap?
A Trucker Cap is characterized by several features, but it's probably best known for the mesh on its rear half. Other characteristics include the high front, often made of foam material, a curved brim, and the adjustable snapback (the fastening for adjusting the cap). The mesh design allows for good ventilation and makes it comfortable to wear. The adjustable fastening ensures a good fit and means one cap fits most people.
The History of the Trucker Cap
As the name suggests, the trucker cap originated in the truck driving community – among truckers. As early as the 1930s, one could discern the outlines of what is now the American Trucker Cap. It all began when drivers for transport companies were given so-called mechanic caps. These often featured the transport company's logo on the front, just as baseball caps had the team's logo on the front.
Gimme Caps
The idea of people acting as walking billboards appealed to several companies. From the 1960s onwards, it was common for local businesses to give away caps as part of their marketing efforts. Because of these "generous companies," they earned the nickname "gimme caps." The companies used the opportunity for advertising by distributing caps with their own logos. Since these were often handed out at truck stops and generally beloved by truck drivers, they became known as the Trucker Cap.
More than just a cap for truck drivers
Although the trucker cap's popularity primarily arose as a result of smart and inexpensive marketing by local businesses in the US, over time it has grown to be so much more than that. In the 2000s, it reached new heights when young trendsetters embraced it and elevated its status. Today, it's used for everything – by everyone – practical and fashionable as it is.
Trucker Cap vs. Baseball Cap
Today's Trucker Cap closely resembles the classic baseball cap. In the 70s, the design of trucker caps changed to become more similar to baseball caps. Nevertheless, there are differences between the two, and here's a brief overview:
Trucker Cap:
High front – with ample space for logo/advertising
The front of the cap is made of stiff foam
The back of the cap is made of plastic mesh for good ventilation (also cheaper to produce than cotton caps)
It usually has a snapback
Originally used by drivers and workers who received the caps from local businesses
Baseball Cap:
Lower front than a Trucker Cap
The entire cap is made of the same materials, such as cotton and polyester
Originally made of wool and leather
Can be adjustable, but doesn't have to be a snapback
Originally used by baseball players to shade their eyes from the sun during baseball games
There are thus several differences between the two cap types, while they also greatly resemble each other. They have almost the same shape – the trucker cap is just a little higher in the front, and they are both known for their curved brim.
