The History of the Cap

The original and perhaps most popular cap, the baseball cap, came into being when baseball emerged in the mid-1800s. Players needed something to shield their eyes, and they began wearing hats with brims to keep the sun out of their sight.

In 1860, the Brooklyn Excelsiors team started wearing a cap very similar to the modern caps we use today.

The Different Parts of a Cap

The appearance of a cap is formed by several parts. Different caps naturally consist of different parts, but a typical baseball cap consists of these:

Brim/Visor
Button (on top)
Ventilation holes
Closure mechanism (snapback, velcro, strapback)
Buckram (caps with a fixed shape have a firm fabric in the front to maintain their shape)
