What is a fitted cap?
There are a variety of different caps. They come with everything from curved to flat brims, to caps with or without adjustment options. Caps that don't have any means of adjusting the size are called fitted caps. Such caps come in fixed sizes and only fit one size. The intention is that it should fit your head perfectly, without you having to adjust it.
The origin of fitted caps
It all started with the emergence of baseball in the mid-1800s. Players needed something to shield their eyes so that the sun wouldn't interfere with the game. Therefore, they began to wear hats.
A variety of hats have been used, including so-called boaters hats and pillbox hats.
One of the hats that helped shape the cap into what we know today is the cap used by the Brooklyn Excelsiors in 1860. This was a cap with a longer brim and a deeper crown with a button, compared to hats that had been used previously.
The baseball cap had already become popular among baseball teams, and recognized cap manufacturers had also been established. One of these was New Era Cap Co, which eventually became the cap manufacturer for all teams in Major League Baseball. They already produced fitted caps and released their first adjustable cap in the 1940s.
New Era 59FIFTY
After launching adjustable caps, they redesigned their version of the baseball cap in 1954 and introduced the more modern 59FIFTY. For many, this is probably the original fitted cap. It is an iconic cap, characterized by its flat brim, stable front, wide profile, and not least its delicate back, without holes and clasps or other adjustments.
Flexfit
Another variant of fitted caps is Flexfit caps. These are made with advanced technology that allows the cap to sit comfortably on the head without tightening too much. This gives them a good fit, while also being comfortable to wear.
